The Burmese Cat

The Burmese is a breed of cat that originated in Thailand, once called Siam. There are two types of Burmese breeds: the British and the American. The American Burmese cat has a shorter nose and bulkier shape than the British Burmese. The British Burmese's face is also more angular in shape. Both types of Burmese have short, but luxurious coats that don't shed much and don't need a lot of grooming.

The Burmese Cat

Burmese Cat
Burmese carry surprising weight for their size and have often been described as +ACY-ldquo;bricks wrapped in silk.+ACY-rdquo; Their coats are very short, satin-like in texture, and generally require little grooming other than daily petting. There is a range in Burmese head and body type; the more compact cats with the rounder heads are seen in the show ring. Burmese have large, expressive eyes that are great pools of innocence and seductive appeal, irresistible in effect. These eyes are their most persuasive weapon in an arsenal of endearing traits that mask an awesome power to hypnotize their owners into life-time love affairs through which they effortlessly rule their families.

The Burmese is a breed of domesticated cats split into two subgroups: the American Burmese and the British Burmese. Most cat registries do not recognise a split between the two groups, but those that do formally refer to the type developed by British cat breeders as the European Burmese. The Burmese was first recognized as a distinct breed in America in 1936 by the Cat Fanciers' Association. Owing to the extensive breeding with Siamese cats that had been used to increase the population, the original type was overwhelmed and registration was temporarily dissolved during the 1940s. The breed was recognized by the UK Governing Council of the Cat Fancy in 1952. In 1953, after years of selective breeding, Burmese cats in America once again conformed to type and were recognized.

Burmese Cat picture "The Burmese cat has been described as the most perfect pet cat. "

"The Burmese is an excellent cat for people who enjoy an active and friendly cat.

"The Burmese cat is an exceptional animal and makes a wonderful pet."
The Burmese cat is an exceptional animal and makes a wonderful pet. Those people who are fortunate to share their lives with them or have shared their lives with them already know that there is no finer cat. The National Alliance of Burmese Breeders+ACY-rsquo; pamphlet describes the Burmese as +ACY-ldquo;a people oriented cat, [who] are true lap-loving companions, quick to learn and extremely loyal. They are very trusting of people and often beat their owners to the door to greet the guests. Burmese are often described as +ACY-lsquo;dog+ACY-rsquo; like because they tend to follow their owners from room to room.+ACY-rdquo; In the 15 plus years we have bred and shown these marvelous animals we have not found any of this description to be an exaggeration. In fact, there are many marvelous attributes of their personality not described above. In addition to what has already been quoted, Burmese are playful, active far into their adult years. They are also extremely intelligent and all Burmese owners have some sort of story of how their cats have out smarted them or that they do incredible tricks like opening cabinet doors in kitchens.

The Burmese cat is naturally a desperate daredevil, although many breeders appreciate its silky smooth fur and yellow eyes as examples of elegance. This is an exclusively amiable, gentle and playful creation.

Without a drop of aggression towards people, this unique animal is gentle and calm, but at the same time playful and mentally alert. This is a cat that never bares its claws, making it well suited to families with small children. Like a dog, this cat, although staunchly independent, will always follow you around, adores sleeping in your lap or on your shoulders, and at your disposal will curl up on your chest under a blanket :) This is a cat with dignity, born to rule over and to win your heart.

They are omnivorous and unfussy, seldom ill, passionate about their personal grooming, and tidy. Burmese cats make excellent pets. Their smooth, short coats are easy to look after. They are more clever and loving than the majority of cats, and over all possess an amazing individuality. They simply adore people, get along well with children and dislike being alone. This is a pet, without which you simply cannot live!

Pluses:
Pronounced individuality, intellect, elegance. These cats are very intelligent, get along well with children and love to play. Interestingly, they do not fear traveling by automobile or by public transport.

Minuses:
Tends to wander off in search of adventure, but still needs almost constant attention - communication, love, warmth. Very loud during the mating season.

The Burmese is a solid colored cat with no pointing (as with Siamese). One of the cat associations we belong to, CFA, recognizes four Burmese colors. They are the sable, champagne, blue, and platinum.

Sable is +ACY-ldquo;a rich, warm, sable brown+ACY-rdquo; color, very dark and solid to the roots in the adult. Kittens are often much lighter in color and darken as they mature.

Champagne (also known as chocolate) is a +ACY-ldquo;warm honey beige+ACY-rdquo; color. And like the color of honey, you will find shades of champagne, which are very rich and dark, and other cats that will be much lighter and pale in color.

Blue is a +ACY-ldquo;medium blue with warm fawn undertones.+ACY-rdquo; It is those warm fawn undertones that make the Burmese blue color an exceptional color. There are other blue cats but none with the warmth of the Burmese blue. It is also the most rare of the four colors in CFA.

Platinum (also known as lilac) is described as +ACY-ldquo;a pale, silvery gray with pale fawn undertones.+ACY-rdquo; It is the only true recessive color in the Burmese and sparkles as its namesake platinum describes.

In addition to these four colors, other cat associations, like TICA, recognize additional colors. These other colors are cr+ACY-egrave;me, red, and tortie. Currently we breed only for the four colors recognized by CFA.

Physically the Burmese is +ACY-ldquo;a cat of medium size.+ACY-rdquo; They also have +ACY-ldquo;substantial bone structure, good muscular development and surprising weight for [their] size.+ACY-rdquo; Burmese must have rounded eyes, the larger the better. Color should be a brilliant gold but a pale yellow to a darker yellow is also acceptable in the breed. Together the coat colors and the gold eyes create a very striking combination and makes for the most beautiful of cats. Coats are silky, satin like in texture and this leads me to describe one of the most often quoted descriptions of the Burmese, +ACY-ldquo;the cat that is like a brick wrapped in silk.+ACY-rdquo; The size medium mostly refers to the male, who truly is a medium cat, weighing most commonly between 8-10 pounds. Females are often smaller; even diminutive, with their average weight between 6-8 pounds.

If you do decide the Burmese is the breed for you, then be sure to find a reputable breeder to buy from. The breeders home (or kennel) should be clean and relatively odorless. Make sure the kittens themselves are energetic, curious, and easily handled. Their eyes, noses, and ears should be clean and the coats healthy looking. The price for a Burmese kitten will depend on the individual bloodlines and type. A show quality kitten will be more expensive then a pet quality one. Even for a simple pet, expect to pay somewhere around +ACQ-200. This affectionate and spirited companion is well worth the price.
