| Manx Cat |
The Manx cat
is believed to have originated hundreds of years ago on the Isle of
Man, off the coast of England. Since many trade ships docked on the
Isle, and all had ship cats, it is hard to tell just what the parent
cat really was. Obviously, both longhair and shorthair were represented
in the original mutation. Many longhairs were seen on the Isle along
with the shorthairs.
The Manx is
best known for being tailless, however not every tailless cat is a
Manx. Manx cats that are born without tails have a naturally occurring
genetic mutation which causes them to be born tailless or semi tailed.
Being born tailless does not automatically default any cat to being a
Manx breed cat. Plain and simple, a Manx cat is a cat with ancestry to
the Isle of Man. This is regardless of its appearance, demeanor, tailed
or not.
Manx parents
produce kittens with varying tail lengths and personalities, all in the
same litter. The true Manx cat is normally not the tailless cat you get
from a pet store, farm, ad in a newspaper, back yard breeder or
shelter, despite what they or your vet might tell you. Those cats are
more appropriately known as Domestic Tailless cats. Researchers have
recently found there is a genetic difference between Manx and Domestic
Tailless cats.

"If
you want a quiet, playful cat with an unusual appearance, then the Manx
just may be the ideal breed for you. After all, even if you can+ACY-rsquo;t
bear the thought of owning a tailless cat, the tailies have all the
characteristics of their tailless siblings."

The Manx cat
breed is a highly intelligent cat breed, it is playful, and in its
behaviour, very reminiscent of dogs. It is considered a social feline,
and the breed loves humans. This attribute makes them an ideal breed
for families with young children. Members of this breed tend to like
water, many times even playing with it. This trait makes it very easy
to give these cats a shower for hygiene purposes, unlike most other
cats. Although not as trainable as dogs, Manx cats can learn simple
commands, such as No. Other cat breeds that share similar personality
traits are Bengal and Ocicat. If there are multiple Manx cats in a
household, an owner might notice that they chase each other frequently.
This is common behavior for Manx cats; they like to chase each other.
However, Manx cats usually are very quiet cats, so this is typically
their only vice.
Manx cats and kittens
have been popular pets for many years but few people knew they existed
until the 1900's. In 1901 a group of British Manx enthusiasts formed a
club to promote recognition of the breed and since then their
popularity has soared. Unfortunately, the breed is extremely rare,
especially show quality cats therefore the demand is very high but they
are still very hard to get hold of. Many Brits and Americans are big
Manx fanciers but few manage to acquire their preferred fury feline
friend.
Manx Genetics
The Manx cat+ACY-nbsp;
is a stocky, solid animal of the Feline Family characterised by a dense
double coat (long or short), a compact body, very short back, hind legs
that are visibly longer than the front legs, they are+ACY-nbsp; big boned,
have a wide chest, with greater depth of flank than other cats. The
standard weight for males is 4.5 to 5.5 kilograms with the females is
3.5 to 4.5 Kilograms.+ACY-nbsp; The Manx cats head is broad and jowled with
round eyes, and the ear-set is distinct to the breed. When the Manx is
viewed from the back, the ears and the top of the head form a "cradle"
or "rocker" shape. The Manx Cats ears themselves are broad at the base
and taper to a narrower, rounded tip. This is the general appearance of
all Manx cats, and is their unique description regardless of whether
they are show-quality or not.
The Manx
voice is usually very quiet for its size. Even a female in full-blown
heat doesn't make very much noise at all. The Manx has a distinct
"trill" which you most often hear from females talking to the kits, but
with which they will reply to their people's verbalizations as well.
The Manx is a
very playful cat as a rule. They can jump higher than anyone could
imagine, and it is not unusual to find them perching on the highest
point in any room. They have extremely powerful hind quarters. It has
been stated by one Manx owner that "Manx are the feline sport cars of
the cat world with their acceleration and quick turns". Manx exhibit
many dog-like characteristics such as retrieving and burying their
toys. They will either be known as a "one person cat" or the "family
cat". However, once they bond with someone, it is difficult for many
Manx to be happy in a different home. On the other hand, there are
those Manx that readily accept attention from any human source!
Manx make
good pets for younger children if they grow up with them, because of
their even-temperedness. An older Manx may have some difficulty
adjusting to the noise and quickness of children, however, since Manx
generally prefer a quiet, settled environment. If your home is a quiet
one, you'll find that your young Manx quickly becomes accustomed to
that peace and quiet, and simply slamming a door may startle the cat.
For the most part, though, Manx aren't timid cats, and will place a lot
of confidence in their people's reaction to events. A Manx that has
been raised in a family environment will transfer easily to another
home and remain a happy, playful cat.
